When I applied for a Global Engagement Fellowship, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I wanted to go to the United Kingdom for a summer and Spain for a semester. Then I looked at the study abroad options for the College of Engineering and learned that they only offered college sponsored programs in Clermont-Ferrand, France and Arezzo, Italy. I considered going to Clermont-Ferrand for a summer and then Italy for a semester, but quickly decided that I would just go to Italy for both my summer and semester, and I would study Italian instead of Spanish. That idea lasted all of two weeks.
After the Study Abroad 101 session with Shanna Vincent, I realized that I did not have to study aboard though the College on Engineering to get credits toward my major. I know that it will be harder to transfer credits if I do not attend a college sponsored program, but I am willing to put in the extra work to go where I want.
At the moment I am still planning to go to Arezzo, Italy the summer of 2015. However, now I believe I will take a year in Western Europe, with one or both semesters in the United Kingdom. That was where I originally wanted to go, and, since I learned I can still study Spanish in the UK, I am even more excited. I am extremely happy that the University of Oklahoma offers so many different study abroad options, because I am able to study exactly what I want, in the exact place I have always wanted to go.
