On Saturday I had an excursion to Florence. It was pretty fun and I got to see the Ufizzi and Academia museums, and I got to go shopping. There was actually a lot of shopping.
I know that the David is one of the most famous famous sculptures in the world, but I didn’t think it was any more or less awe inspiring than any of the other sculptures in the Academia. I think that the David is interesting because Michelangelo knew enough about perspective to design a statue that would be perfectly proportioned when viewed from far away. Unfortunately, the roof of the cathedral it was designed to reside on was not strong enough to support it, so the statue got shuffled around to a few different places before ending up in the Academia.
Over all I liked the Uffizi museum better because it had a better variety of artwork and the rooms were art in themselves. But the Academia had a Stradivarius museum with instruments from different points in history, which was really amazing!!!
But my favorite part of Florence was definitely the leather market!
I may or may not have shopaholic tenancies, and the Florence Leather Market definitely catered to that part of my psyche. I loved it! There was bartering and buying and arguing. It was some of the best fun I’ve had in Italy. And I bought a bunch of gifts for my family! I would tell more, but you can’t trust the internet to keep a secret…
Moral of the story: If you ever get a chance to go to the Florence Leather Market, take it. It is an amazing experience!!!
